This is due to their living conditions in the harsh mountain climate, where warm, sunny, favourable weather can change to rainy and cool within minutes. In these conditions, bees need to get their work done quickly, intensively producing nectar and pollen to provide honey for their families to survive in these difficult conditions.

Carpathian bees can work in low light conditions, with high-temperature gradients at the foot of mountains and on their peaks, can produce nectar even in light rain and take nectar with a sugar content of less than 8%, and work on many plant species at the same time.

The Ukrainian Carpatka is a versatile breed that easily adapts to work in cold, rainy climates and tropical, even arid conditions in the south.

Under favourable conditions, Carpathian bees can produce 120-150 kg of commercial honey per season. These properties make Ukrainian Carpathian bees suitable for successful use in various parts of the world, both on small private and large industrial farms.

Packages and queen bees are some of the most important exports from Ukrainian apiaries. The loss of the traditional Russian market is now being compensated by reorientation to other countries, including Canada, Romania, the Czech Republic, and Uzbekistan. Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and integration into global trade structures will allow Transcarpathian beekeepers to work more confidently and profitably, as financial self-sufficiency will enable them to allocate more attention and funds to the Carpathian bee preservation and its further improvement.

The preservation of purebred Carpathian bees is strategically important for Ukraine.

That’s why the Carpathian Bee Breeding and Reproduction Laboratory of the National Scientific Centre “Prokopovych Institute of Beekeeping” has been researching and protecting local populations of Carpathian bees for many decades. The laboratory’s specialists breed purebred Carpathian bees of the Vuchkivskyi, Rakhivskyi, Hoverla and Synevyr types in highland apiaries.

In close cooperation with the Transcarpathian Beekeepers’ association “Sribnyy Kray”, the laboratory’s specialists are working on the population conservation of purebred Carpathian bees in private apiaries in a geographically separated area of the Intermountain Ecosystem, which includes 7 highland settlements. At the same time, the alpine centres for natural controlled mating of queen bees Rostoka, Cantina, Verkhniy Bystryi, and Medvezhyi are successfully operating. This modern breeding tool enables the effective improvement of local Carpathian bee populations, and their preservation in a high-quality manner, and provides local apiaries with high-quality breeding material for further mass reproduction of Carpathian bees.

However, the risks of uncontrolled hybridisation, and thus the destruction of local populations of Carpathian bees in Transcarpathian apiaries, are very high. This is due to the uncontrolled importation of bee breeds alien to Transcarpathia by some unaware beekeepers, which leads to the genetic contamination of local bees. Therefore, the fate of purebred Carpathian bees is directly in the hands of local beekeepers and depends on their awareness and understanding of the problem.

The strategy for the development of beekeeping in Transcarpathia is shaped by the beekeeping community, which unites its efforts through the joint public formation Transcarpathian Beekeepers’ association “Sribnyy Kray”, uniting around the idea of preserving purebred Ukrainian Carpathian bees, through the development of a common brand of the geographically indicated product “Honey of Transcarpathia”, through the promotion of export-oriented products to international markets.

There are well-known beekeeping farms in Transcarpathia that are the leaders of the region’s beekeeping community. Notable examples include the multidisciplinary beekeeping farm of the Victor Papp family, which comprises two main divisions: a breeding plant for breeding Carpathian bees of the Synevyr type and a specialised enterprise of TM “Med Karpat” for in-depth processing of bee products; and beekeeping farms of the families of Y. Khoma (TM “Medovyi Krai”), V. Bets (Kolochava apiary), and others.

The honey collected in the Carpathians by hardworking Carpatka is famous for its healing qualities.

So are all other bee products. In 2010, as part of the Honey Tourist Route of Transcarpathia, the family of beekeepers Liudmyla and Viktor Peresta opened the Honey House tasting room. In the Honey House, you can get a close look at bee products, and taste honey, cream honey or honey drinks.

The Honey House offers visitors a close look at bee products, with the opportunity to taste honey, creamed honey, or honey drinks.

You can also watch a bee family live through the glass wall of the hive. Tourists come here, and children love the Honey House. Viktor and Liudmyla Peresta run a small family apiary, do educational work and are always happy to welcome visitors.

The beekeepers of Transcarpathia are hard-working and dedicated people who are always open to communication, welcome guests warmly, and will always find time to share their passion for Carpathian bees and the products they produce with their help.

This article prepared in the frame of “Green and inclusive agricultural policy – steps towards” project implementing by ICO IC «Green Dossier» with the support of the European Union and the International Renaissance Foundation within the framework «European Renaissance of Ukraine» project.

Its content is the exclusive responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily reflect the views of the European Union and the International Renaissance Foundation.

[45,77,46
post-3605","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-rubrics-agriculture-en","news-rubrics-carpathians-en","news-rubrics-sustainable-production-en

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
