April 22 – International Earth Day

April 22 – International Earth Day

For 30th anniversary of “Green Dossier”

Our children painted the first concrete fence in Kyiv’s Podil district to celebrate Earth Day in 19 92 (we were part of MAMA-86 at the time). And then Earth Day settled down in the capital’s Hydropark.

Garbage expositions, monuments and shows, a raft made of plastic bottles under a “pirate” flag on the Dnipro River, horsey performances and children’s entertainment, a dawn ritual of a council of all beings – all these strange events were meant to bring attention and involve as many ordinary citizens as possible in addressing environmental problems.

Later, Earth Day in the Hydropark became an annual mandatory event of the Kyiv Palace of Children and Youth. Officers of the Department of Tourism and Local History complement our art events with competitions and contests, involving more and more young people.

Over time, Earth Day eventually extended to the entire Ukraine and became as routine as if it had always existed, joining Ukraine in the global movement to protect the planet.

Earth Day was initiated in 1970 by American students and teachers, and we consider ourselves involved in its establishment in Ukraine.

Our slogan has remained unchanged all these years: WE ALL BELONG TO THE EARTH!
