CSRD, CSDDD, ESG — these acronyms are rapidly becoming part of the everyday vocabulary of Ukrainian agribusinesses and advisory services. In fact, there is nothing radically new about them — they reflect the principles of sustainable development that EU countries have long acknowledged and embedded into policy. However, in Ukraine, despite over two decades of promoting the UN Sustainable Development Goals and awareness-raising efforts, real understanding only began to take root when sustainability reporting became a formal requirement within the EU integration process.
The EU has adopted a range of legislative acts that require companies to disclose their impact on the environment, society, and governance:
📌 CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) — requires large companies to report on sustainability, with the obligation gradually extending to mid-sized enterprises.
📌 CSDDD (Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive) — mandates companies to assess and mitigate sustainability risks throughout their supply chains.
📌 ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) — an evaluation approach to assess business impacts and risks across these three key areas.
In this context, running an agricultural business with care for the environment, responsibility toward communities, and business transparency is quickly becoming the new norm for Ukraine. The country has adopted a national Strategy for Sustainability Reporting and is actively preparing businesses for the shift. The National Bank of Ukraine is advancing ESG-aligned financing, and commercial banks are beginning to include ESG reporting requirements in their loan conditions.
🧭 For agricultural producers, this means:
- New conditions for accessing EU markets;
- New expectations from buyers and partners;
- New requirements from banks and investors;
- The need for internal adjustments and sustainability reporting.
According to Ukraine’s Green Transition Office, over 70% of Ukrainian companies lack the tools to implement ESG practices. While the Strategy for Sustainability Reporting has been adopted, most farmers still do not have access to clear guidance on how to meet these new requirements in practice.
